The road test or driving test is the final step in order to obtain a driver's license in the state of New York. Road Tests are administered by the Department of Motor Vehicles. During the Road Test a Department of Motor Vehicles examiner will evaluate your ability to handle the motor vehicle and your ability to interact in traffic safely. In order to be tested you must make an appointment. The DMV examiner will give you an interim license that allows you to drive. Keep the interim license with your photo learner permit.

PIRP is also known as the Defensive Driving Course or Motor Vehicle Accident Prevention Course. It is a comprehensive driver safety course which provides knowledge and techniques for safe and lawful driving. The classroom course is 320 minutes long. It is presented in one or more sessions. The course must include essential information about traffic safety. It must cover these and other topics: driver attitude and behavior, defensive driving techniques, and the Vehicle & Traffic Law. If you need to verify that your course completion is on your DMV record, you can request a copy of your driving record.

International Driving Permit: An International Driving Permit is not a driver license. The permit only verifies that you hold a valid driver license in your home country. Your foreign driver license, not the International Driving Permit, allows you to drive in NYS. Contact the authorities in your home country to get an International Driving Permit. If you are not a resident of the US, you cannot apply for an International Driving Permit in the US. You are not required to have an International Driving Permit to drive in NYS, but the permit has value.

The Department of Motor Vehicles recommends that all learners have a minimum of 50 hours of supervised practice driving before they take their road test, with at least 15 hours at night (after sunset). It is also recommended that at least 10 hours of supervised practice driving be in moderate to heavy traffic. Professional driving instruction is recommended as well as a meticulous review of the Drivers Manual. If you are under age 18 and have a Class DJ or Class MJ permit, make sure you read about supervised practice driving hours required by law that must be certified by your parent or guardian.
